August was the busiest month ever at the Deer Lake Regional Airport with a record 39,923 enplaning / deplaning passengers. The previous record, established in July of this year, totalled 37,436 passengers.
Passenger traffic for the month of August increased by 18.75% over the same period in 2010. The year-to-date traffic volumes are up 8.4% over the same period in the past year.
“We have just experienced the busiest summer ever in the history of the airport”, said Airport CEO, Jamie Schwartz. “During the three months of June, July and August over 102,000 enplaning / deplaning passengers were recorded at the airport”, added Schwartz.
Todd Lee, Chair of the Board for the Airport Authority, recognized the support of the airlines in reaching these record levels of traffic”. “We could not continue to grow and expand without increased airline services and in particular additional seat capacity”, said Lee. “The airlines have supported the market growth and demand and this should help generate further economic activity throughout Western Newfoundland”, added Lee.
The Deer Lake Regional Airport provides regular or seasonal domestic and charter passenger services with several airlines including Air Canada, Air Canada Express, Canadian North, Provincial Airlines, Sunwing and WestJet.
